OT: Camera / Mic question

UlfLaursen wrote on 12/15/2007, 9:07 AM
Hi,

I have two mices, a Sennheisser MKE80 and a Røde NTG2 which both are powered by internal batteries.

As I understand I can use theese mics. on both my cameras which cannot produce phantom 48V power (like FX7 and HV20) and thoose that can (my PD170 and XHA1). Let's say I put a camera like the PD170 or XHA1 in mode that gives the 48V output and I at the same time have the battery in the mic. could that damage either the camera and/or the mic to give it "double power"? If so, would it be better to use a mic w/o power or to pull out the battery to prevent damage, or doesn't it matter at all?

Thanks.

You're always best off using Phantom, and you don't need to worry about having a battery in the mic at the same time.
Mics are generally more sensitive when using phantom vs battery, and no, it does not give "double power."
There are some very rare exceptions, but neither of your mics are one of them.

Btw. Looking forward to get the Vol. 9 VASST disc - I think it will be under the tree this year together with the web video disc :)

Can my PD170 power my Seinnheisser if it doesn't have batteries in it, or if they run low?

That sounds like what you're saying, but it's new to me. It would be great if that's the case!

Yes Lili, it can. On the block of switches there are 2 swithces that says 48V on/off, 1 for each channel. If you turn it on you are able to let the bat. out your mic.

I ahev been told that it is both more stable and a better way to do it.
