OT: Canon XL1

We have a XL1 in our classroom. Lately I have noticed that during production, the camera sometimes shuts itself off similar to power saving modes on consumer cameras to save battery life. However, We have the camera plugged in to a power source.

Is there a menu setting some where I can turn off power saving mode or is there a chance the little watch battery for remembering settings has gone dead or something? Twice last week it cut out in the middle of a broadcast leaving looking foolish while live on air.

Ive searched the Canon manual but see nothing about this.

Thanks

If memory serves me correctly, you could not turn that off on the XL1. Not only was that feature designed to save battery power, it also disengages the heads to keeps them from wearing out the tape when recording is paused.

well my solution this morning was to put a used tape in and leave the record button on during broadcast to make sure there is no idel time.

That has to be the dumbest idea especially for a camera that is used in broadcast. It would just make more sense to allow the camera to run without having to engage the record.

The XL series (with the exception of the H1) was never intended to used as a studio camera.

JJK,

what is the section titled? My page 36 (pdf manual) talks about setting the audio.

"Five minute auto shutoff" under "Basic Recording". Basic Recording starts on my page 35.

If there's NO TAPE in it, it won't shut down.
