OT: Capture Software alternatives?

Nathan_Shane wrote on 5/29/2007, 10:44 PM
Okay, I put the Turtle Beach PCI Video Capture card back into my system to play around with it a bit. I can capture video using both Vegas and the included capture software, but I was wondering what other capture software alternatives there might be to using the capture utility included in Vegas. I've searched the internet and there are just too many apps to determine what might be a decent program, so are any of you using some other app from time to time?

VidCap works just fine for me. Use it with a variety of PCs, firewire cards, mobo firewire and decks. It's not without the odd quirk but now I know what they are I make allowances and all is fine. The internal capture works fine for both HDV and SDi capture.

I have a copy of SCLive I've used once for capturing from a PDX 10.

Scenalyzer (a.k.a. SCLive) is a must. 10x better than internal Vegas capture. SD only. Haven't used HDV Split, but lots of people sure like it. Those are the only two worth looking at, I think.

Nathan? What are you looking for in a Capture Utility? Do you think there is something missing in the Vegas Capture utility?

Not sure what Nathan thinks, but I sure think there is a lot missing. Here's a link to an old post where I described many of the advantages of Scenalyzer over Vegas capture. I could probably double that list if I had a few more minutes.

John, I'd still like to know from Nathan. Understanding how a User is using the software can provide much needed feedback.

. .and yes, John, Elizabeth Barrett Browning. And that's to show I did re-read your post.

.. spelling edit! again . .

Hey Grazie. To answer your question, I should have stated that I was using the s-video input of the Turtle Beach card to capture from external sources, mainly VCR, DVD player, 8mm cam, TV, etc. (when I capture from a DV camcorder tape, I do use just Vegas for capture.

Using the AdCap software that comes with the card, you can capture in AVI, and DV Type1/2 and select different capture sizes dependent upon which of those you choose to use.

Using Vegas capture, I am only able to select a 320x240 capture size (and there are not any options for selecting the capture format).

So what I realized is that not all capture software is the same, so it got me to thinking about what other capture apps may be available and perhaps there are some that are better than that in Vegas.
