You might want to look to see if the latest version of your video card driver now has that setting. I have an nVidia card, and the latest driver lets me adjust it multiple ways. Even if your driver does not, I think a download called "PowerStrip" gives anyone the ability to make their own display settings.
Of course, if you do, your ellipses will then become circles, but you'll probably see them as ellipses, since you're already used to how things are supposed to look like on your current setup.
