Can I match the talent to the characteristics of the background?
Example: Background is of a sunset with redish sky, you don't want
pure white lighting your talent. Use gels.

I get to play with virtual sets (backgrounds generated
in software) and find they are too sharply focused. You may need to make
them a little out of focus to give you some sense of distance.

Where is light coming from? You may want to match shadows in the face and
on the "ground".

EDIT: If you are doing something like a news report from the field, record a few
seconds with a stand-in in the same spot of your talent. This will give you some
reference points to match.
