I found the need to allow a client to look at pre-release video. A local office supply store
had a SimpleNET USB NAS adapter.
It doesn't fully take the place of a FTP server but was quick and easy. This gadget
was simple to set up. The supplied power cube is the correct one for crowded
outlets and all I needed to do was plug in a USB memory stick and LAN cable to
the LAN. A simple command to forward FTP port 21 to this device on my high
speed internet modem and I was done.
Security is not tight so anyone can see other clients files unless you ZIP the files
with a password. You can set up users with rights to read only or allow them
to write to your USB drive.
EDIT: If you know Linux and Javascript, you can make the device more secure
but out of the box its not bad for a small gizmo!
