OT - Codec Survey

People might find this interesting. I found this on the Black magic forum. This guy put together a survey on what codecs people are using in their workflows.

I think a survey like this would be cool centered around Vegas. The results page can be slow, so I posted a link to the results so far. Visit the site to take the survey.

At first glance, this is interesting, but on study it does not tell or SELL.

Here is what I mean:
Particularly with the wide variant of customer base as supports Vegas, there is as much variance in codec flows as there are users. To begin with , to be fair in customer results in summary survey accounting you would have to divide the results between variations of paid professional use and hobbies type usages. This alone might produce 4 or more categories of uses and flows.

Go back to the results of BlackMagic survey - it shows a strong bias that the company itself truly represents which is a large committment to Apple and Quicktime workflows. That is the nature of the industry segment that BlackMagic serves, hence the survey skew.

I think this guy posted this survey on the Red forum as well, hence all the Redcode. Its not a comprehensive survey, I am sure if you surveyed Vegas users the results would be somewhat different.

Also HDV would fall under the XDCAM/MPEG2 line item I believe, although there was no HDV specific selection.

DNxHD is absolutely underrated as a capture codec. Faster, smaller, and as sharp as ProRes.
DNxHD recently released a 440 Mbps 10-bit 4:2:2 especially for Arri Alexa acquisition. Probably work well with Red, too.
