OT: Comments? My web site

ricklaut wrote on 1/13/2005, 3:29 PM
I just created a web site for my "business" (ok - it's really an attempt to legitimize my hobby!). Care to provide feedback? The site is http://www.rnlvideo.com

I'm not an html programmer, so I used templates that are provided by web host I signed up with. The templates have limits and I'm considering whether or not to get a real product (Front Page?) and start learning so I can improve the site. I'm curious to know what your opinions are on my content as well as the few video examples I put up. All of the videos but one were done with Vegas.

Remember - I don't make a living doing this, but I thought it would be a good time to do more than I have.

Thanks!

Rick

looks a hell of lot better than our site that hasnt been updated in 2 years.

I also watched your racing web spot. Pretty good stuff, great stuff for a hobby.

Were the d/l speeds ok on the video?

You are doing a fine job on the site. However, if you ever decide to change to a different program for writing HTML and site management, I recommend that you look at Namo WebEditor 6.0.

You can see it at: www.namo.com

Don't know if you can improve, but the Namo WebEditor makes it VERY easy to change the entire web site from one theme (look) to another in just a few minutes. Othere web editors, such as Front Page, MacroMedia, etc., can be a major pain and VERY time consuming.

Those programs have their own advantages for really big commerce sites, but for small sites you should at least take a look at Namo's product.

An example of a site that uses it and changes the complete appearance of the WHOLE site (hundreds of pages) for each holiday, such as the current "Valentine" appearance, is:

www.future-digital.com

Check it again after Valentine's day.

I prefer using Photoshop and just splicing for webpages. Then use notepad to use the code behind.

Thanks for the recommendation. I think I've taken these java based templates about as far as they can go, so this is a product I'll give some serious consideration to!

Great site, just wonderful.

one thing however (there was no "but" there) the pictures in the examples are links but they're broken.

Thanks - I just found that - for some reason, I can't get rid of those links (they're pointing to /undefined/. Even after deleting the image and re-inserting it, its trying to link them.

Maybe I can find those links manually in the code and fix them since the template is messing it up.

make note of the image names and then search your code for references to them and then delete it from your code.

Just checked it out again.

http://www.rnlvideo.com/images/RNLVideoCommercialStill.jpg needs to be linked to the acutal video. This is where Dreamweaver makes linking simple.

I could give you more advice if I could view your source code but your site doesnt reveal the source code in my browser. :)

Ok - I think I got most of the images fixed manually. I wonder why it won't let you see the source? I do know that when I'm opening the files in notepad, I have to scroll WAY down to get to what matters.

Thanks!

On the homepage (flash) the buttons cut a hole in your logo on my system.

Sie looks nice. Pretty easy to get thru.

On the FAQs and other places where you say contact us for a quote or info, make sure to put a link to do that right there. Make it easy for them to contact you. Never make them look at all for how to contact to you.

Good stuff...! I'm glad I asked for feedback!

I'm really getting annoyed with this template thing though - when I added my contact information on some of the pages, the template pointed all of my photos back to "undefined". AARRGGH.l
