OT: Converting .VRO files

So, I've been saddled with this DVD from a Hitachi (I think) DVDCam that I need to edit.

The DVD contains two files, a .vro file and a .ifo file. and the disc will not play in my set top boxes. (It plays on my PC using InterVideo.)

I copied the .vro file onto my PC and simply renamed it to .mpg.
Now the file played fine in Real player and WMP...yet when I try to drop it into a Vegas project, I get an error about a missing audio codec.

So I load the .mpg file into VirtualDub and render it to AVI.

Drop the AVI into Vegas and it plays fine....but NO audio. Drop the same AVI onto Real or WMP and it plays with audio.

Okay, so I reload the .mpg file in V-Dub, and render just the audio as .wav.

Drop the .wav into Vegas, and get the audio codec error msg. Drop the wav file onto Real and it plays fine. On WMP, error msg.

So I guess my ACTUAL question is:

How do I convert .vro files into .avi files (complete with audio) that are editable in Vegas?

Using Vegas 6.0c, you should be able put the original DVD into your computer and then :

File>import>DVD Camcorder disc

This will copy the footage to your hard drive and at the same time tweak the source material so it is usable on the timeline.

Well. There. You. Go.

I'll give that a whirl tonite! (I had thought 6.0c worked with .vob only.)

I imported the .vro files into the timeline, and they were converted flawlessly to mpg files, complete with sound.

However, I can't do a danged thing with them without crashing V6c!
Even after rebooting and starting fresh....

If I try to render a loop region...crash.
If I try to "Open in Trimmer"....crash over 50% of the time.
If I succeed in making a subclip in the trimmer, and add to the timeline (even an empty timeline)...crash.
If I try to render the whole thing to avi so I can edit in avi....render time is hours for a 20min file.

What's up with all that?

Vegas 5 ran like a tank...this version seems more like the Hindenberg.

...actually, looks like the same types of problems with these converted mpg files in V5 also.

My PC isn't the greatest (1.8Ghz, 500mbRam), but has always run Vegas fine, even when taxed.

I suspect the mpg files are somehow the culprit.
