anyone know anything about this as a playbac codec (does it encode as well)?

is it better / as good as / worse than those already in v8 and installed players, such as power dvd?

The core AVC pro is a direct show filter, so, I don't think Vegas will be able to make use of it. I have been using it to view AVCHD files acquired with the SR-7 through windows media player. It is kind of nice to be able to just double click an AVCHD file in explorer and be able to watch it. It seems to be a pretty efficient decoder. I am able to get smooth playback even during moving scenes using my Core2Duo laptop (T7300), playing back from the internal 5400rpm hard-disk. Quality wise, as far as I can tell, it is as good as the sony player that comes with the camera.
