Sounds like a smart fan. They slow down when the CPU isn't hot to make less noise and speed up when the cpu gets hot to move the heat. :)

Do a forum search for FANGUI. It's a free utility that I use on a Dell IInspiron 8200 to monitor and control cooling fans. It also has a feature that you can minimze to the toolbar that will provide realtime readout of CPU temp.

BTW, I have to initialize Fangui and manually turn my fans on for continuous operation during Print to Tape operations. Otherwise the IRQs monitoring my CPU and calling the fans on would give me flashes of Blue Screen on my output. DGrob
