OT: Crackles and pops after render

I'm getting the dreaded crackles and pops that usually are related to the sound card but I don't understand how it can be the sound card.
In the veg I built this clip in (a single avi with music bed track) it plays fine but when I render out to avi I get the nasties (tried twice).
I went to the Delta site and noticed a driver for XP SP2 (I only recently went to SP2 when I upgraded to V8).
I now have the new driver installed but no change (after also trying the windows classic driver etc)...any thoughts?

What if any audio plugins are you using?

I use Wavehammer all the time and in this case I was overusing it...I had it on the audio track (but not on the music bed) but I also had it in the Master bus (which I didn't realize when I assigned it to the audio track).
I turned it off in the master bus and it sounds great!
