OT: Crossloop.com

I just spent 3 hours editing a video and burning a DVD for a friend of mine who bought Vegas after seeing what I've been able to do with it. The amazing part was I did it from 60 miles away using a desktop sharing utility offered for free by CROSSLOOP.

It started out as a live tutorial but my friend had to leave the house for an hour. So I told him to leave Crossloop running and I'd finish up the edits and start the render. Turns out his wife was home and when I started playing back the video she heard the music coming from her husband's office and was startled to see the mouse moving around and editing her husband's video.

I ended up finishing the renders and setting up a DVD Arch project. I prepared the file for burning but couldn't exactly load the DVD into the tray. So I open up notpad on his computer and typed him out a little note that I left under the "burn" button.

What a great little app crossloops turned out to be and it's simple enough to get a computer dumby on the other end to set up. It's sort of like Netmeeting but isn't as falable and much simpler to use. Turns out it's good for playing practical jokes too. Performance while editing video was a bit laggy and playback of video was practically useless - and there's no audio. But I was able to manage quite well by feel.

When all was done we started another session where I showed him how to upload the video to Vimeo... I'm looking forward to seeing it for the first time when it's done converting!

http://www.realvnc.com/ does very well too, and the free version is very capable. I've got this running on all my PCs. There are a couple that haven't had their monitors turned on in months because it's easier to do a VNC connection from my laptop than to move over to that machine. I can also check on everything at home, start up new renders, do some editing, etc. from my office during the day.

I use the free version of LogMeIn to do similar tasks - controlling my own machines from elsewhere in the world, and configuring, fixing, etc, machines belonging to friends and family without me having to be physically present at their PC. Works beautifully.

Oh, ye lost souls!

Don't you know that you're supposed to pay $120/year to GoToMyPC to be able to do remote PC access?

There is no honor in the world anymore...

:O)

Free LogMeIn here also. I maintain my elderly dad's laptop in Arizona and my college daughter's laptop in Indiana from my home base here in Oregon. In addition, I can access my home machine from one of my laptops wherever I go, just like they say on the abrasive GoToMyPC commercials. Great program, very intuitive, and fast. Can't copy docs with the freeware version, but you can email them to yourself and pick them up that way, and for big stuff you can use free services such as YouSendIt.
