OT: Dell's 30" LCD monitor shipping next week

For those who are feeling a bit cramped working in the limited screen area of their 24" Dell 2405FPWs, help is on the way.

Their new 3007WFP was just announced at CES and will ship next week for a measly $2,199 (hopefully you already have a high end graphics card to handle the increased resolution).

This is real money, but less than the $2500 for Apple's 30" Cinema Display.

Dell's LCD may also be better, like the 24" LCD is substantially better than Apple's 23" Cinema Display....

Finally work with 2 HD streams side by side... :O)

PC World just put the Eizo FlexScan S2410W a bit above the Dell this month. The Eizo is more expensive, but what jumped out at me was it seems to have more images controls which may be a appreciated by someone using this as an HD monitor.

Eizo's FlexScan S2410W shows colors and contrast like a pro--no surprise, since it's geared toward graphics professionals. For those in the know, this 24-inch wide-screen LCD permits sophisticated screen adjustments for such variables as gamma, gain, hue, and saturation; and for less demanding users, it supplies five screen modes. Touch-sensitive electrostatic switches provide a flat, clean interface that's easier to work with than the usual aspirin-sized buttons.

Looks like great specs, for only twice the price ($1,756 at Monitor Outlet instead of ~$900 street for the Dell).

Some HD monitor users may wish for component HD inputs though, the Eizo only has RGB (not YUV).

The Dell 2405FPW is now $877.20 with a 3-year warranty directly from Dell Small Biz (which has better support than Dell Home). Valid until Jan. 11.

Good catch on the inputs.

Man, they are blowing out prices on the Dell.

...and free shipping, too.

Tom's Hardware thought the Dell 2405 was "too bright for any use except CAD/CAM against a black background".

Would be nice to hear from some current owners on this.

Do you use a darker theme for Vegas and Windows? Any other thoughts overall?

Also note that the 30" Dell only comes with a single DVI input (no other video inputs). Might be a deal-breaker for those wanting to use it for reviewing HD content. Of course, you could always get a Component/DVI adapter, but still, the single video input (as opposed to the multiple digital/analog inputs on Dell's 24" LCD) is quite a letdown.

The difference in quality between component and DVI is quite astonishing though.

I have tested this, with top quality professional cables for both (no magic dust consumer hype stuff), and the picture at higher resolutions was always much clearer with the digital signal.

At 2560x1600, I would expect the difference to be even greater.

It's soon time to leave component behind...

I have the Dell 24". Run it at 1920X1200 resolution, powered by an ATI X850. I really enjoy working on the monitor. Images are sharp and clear and there is plenty of real estate. Haven't tried this yet, but it does picture in picture, so I had thought about using the same monitor as both primary and for external preview.
