Those of you with HDNet have a treat!

Discovery Launch in HD

"HDNet will be deploying a special Canon DIGI SUPER 100xs lens with image stabilization capable of a 1860mm focal length. This will enable a 1080i camera situated at one of the tracking sites to follow Discovery at least 176,000 feet, or 33 miles into the earth's atmosphere."

Canon DIGI SUPER 100xs

A bargain TV zoom for only $165,000.

You may be able to get a discount for buying 2 though...

:O)

Canon has decades of experience with really long lenses. They've had a 5200mm lens available for 35mm still cameras, mostly for border surveillance.

5200mm is probably pretty close to the max. reach of the 1860mm on a 2/3" camera.
