OT: DivX on PS3

I got an email today from DivX with the following message:

You may have heard the news about PlayStation 3 support for DivX video. Well, pop the bubbly because it's true. We have indeed made a deal with Sony to add DivX video playback to their popular PS3 gaming console.

And that's all you get for now. While I wish I could answer the most obvious question and tell you exactly when the DivX-laden updates will be released, I can't. Sorry. I know it's a little out of character for gamers, but try to be patient. I mean, you could always go play a game while you wait. I hear Mrs. Pac Man is fun ... the boards change! Imagine that.

I found a thread just yesterday when I was trying to find a way to display divx before the update occurred. In short, if you have Nero Ultimate 7 or 8 you can transcode on the fly and display your video via the media server built into Nero. I did it last night and it worked like a charm for everything but my divx files. I even changed the extension to avi, but it was still a no go. Regardless, some have claimed to get xvid to work.

I updated Nero Ultimate 7 yesterday and now it will play my divx files via the media server on the ps3. I have yet to test a hd divx file. I will do that this afternoon.

I went a head and tried an divx hd file and it was a no go. It said my data was corrupted. :(

DivX isn't working on my PS3 right now, but I expect it will with an upcoming update. What I'm really curious about is whether or not the extended DivX features will work like menus, subtitles and alternate audio tracks. I have ripped most of my DVDs to DivX and am really excited about this.

Natively I cannot get DivX to work either. Until that patch comes out it will not work natively, but if you follow either of the steps above, you will be able to view the files via your ps3 but I doubt menus will be available until the official patch comes out.

Okay,

Earlier I stated that I could not get DivX HD files to work. I need to recant of that statement. I was able to get a 1080 24p file to play. It did play back choppy though but I assume that is due to me using a wireless g network. The other file was 1080i. I don't know why I could not get it to play. I have not tried 720p as I have nothing in that format.

It depends how you have the Nero Media Server Setup to transcode the media files.
It takes Divx In but streams out a compatible format to the PS3.
Depends how the Nero's server's transcoder is setup.

If Nero will play them you should be able to use the method mentioned above to do just that. I have not tried quicktime wrapped files to see if it will work, but I am sure that some should work depending on what is inside the wrapper.

I have my Nero Media Server on one computer set to do not transcode.
The files are passed through and played back in the original content.
On the PS3 when you select the media file & hit the "Triangle" button (Options) you can copy the video to the PS3 local harddisk, nice feature. Also the same with pictures.
The one thing I did have to do is use an extension of mpg for the m2t files (not sure about Nero 8). otherwise the media server doesn't select them.
The 25MBS TS files play correctly streaming on a 1 gig or 100MBS network. The switching hubs are located downstream from the router so this doesn't interfere with any internet traffic for other users.

I've been pretty impressed with the Nero Home Media Server. Doesn't use much cpu usage if your not transcoding the files.

The PS3 Version 2.10 system update is available. It now support DivX and VC-1 (WMV) video playback. Yippee!!

The DivX menus don't work and I imagine neither do alternate audio tracks or subtitles. That's the bad news.

The good news is that HD DivX as downloaded off Stage6.com works perfectly. I just tried it out with http://www.stage6.com/Jake/video/1138149/Jake-Shimabukuro-LIVE:-Touch---HDthis [/link] excellent video. 1920 x 1080 no less!

I've been making HD-Divx & HD-WMV files for awhile that play on the AVelLink2 player.
Most of them played on the PS3 with the 2.1 update.
I would think that their best use would be for streaming.
The hd-mpeg2 and avchd/h264 formats will be my main targets.

You have to admit, it's pretty cool to be able to do an HD project, upload it for free on Stage6.com, and have your PS3 owning friends on this forum be able to watch it in their living rooms!

OT note; It appears that MS gaming reps have been spinning that Sony is dropping their PS3 design for an all Intel product, many Gamestop employees actually believe this, given them a couple of beers and they march to any tune. Some people believe - very strongly, that MS is actually trying to collapse the HD and DVD media market for a download media market only. They cite many examples and its no secret MS wants a big share in the downloaded media market as well as "leasing" or monthly royalty fees for average products. But all the big companies want that market too, but you need a cool media center like the PS3 to make it work, not a Zune or a 1k-4K PC.
