OT - Download of V6d so slow

DelCallo wrote on 2/25/2006, 12:59 AM
I started to download this update while I was browsing the forum. Came back half an hour later to find that only a small percentage of the file had been downloaded, and the timer predicting that the download will finish in something slightly over 24 hours. I'm on a DSL connection - I know it's not the fastest, but, I don't recall having to wait that kind of time when I downloaded my upgrade to 6 or 5 o 4. What could be causing this problem, and how do I correct it, please?

Thanks.

Del? Have you tried downloading another LARGE file? Some A/V type file? If this is from "another" site and this goes well then maybe it is the link to Sony. If it too goes slow then you may well have an issue with your own system - yeah? But 24 hours is not normal. -g

Thanks, Grazie.
I exchange graphic files all the time with my two kids - I make them promotional flyers, posters, etc. They aren't the size of this file, for sure, but they download or upload almost instantly.

Can't figure out why this should be so slow. The "meter" states that I'm receiving at a rate of 1.1kB/sec.

In the time I have spent typing this message to you, I've managed to get "0%" of the of the file - 240 kb of 99.5 mb.

Just doesn't make sense to me.

We'll see.

It might well be you didn't make a solid connection with the server, and you need to quit where you're at, and start again. It also could be that you hit the server during a peak load of one thing or another.
That's happened to me from time to time.
The Sony server is generally very fast, in my experience.

So, how long should downloading of the V6d take?
I've disconnected, rebooted, entered the address for my router to check its settings, change channels, tried Thunderbird, IE, you name it.

Seems as though the best start on the download I've achieved is around 15 kb/sec. Then, I can sit and watch those number gradually fall to less than 2 kb/sec. I guess I'll just have to let it run.

Something seems wrong, though.

FWIW, I can do live phone over ip with no delay or hiccups. My browser seems fast enough to me. I'm at a loss. Maybe I should try my dial-up connection.

I just started the download to test, 254K/sec; predicting 5 minutes left with 25% downloaded.

Try another large download, say one of the sample videos in this forum. Check the rate. If you are downloading to a drive that has plenty of room and is not fragmented, then the problem is with your DSL provider. I would complain to them.

I just pulled my Linksys router out of my connection chain. Am now just hooked up via the DSL modem. Connection speed is per Verizon's specified 585.8 kbits/73.2 kbytes per second (512K). File is now downloading and is 30% complete with around 20 minutes to go.

I'm going to go ahead and let it download, then, reintroduce the router to see if the slowness is, indeed, related to that device.

Thanks for the replies.

Done.
Now for some troubleshooting of my router.

Must be your pipe, I just downloaded the whole thing in less than a minute.

I have to "reset" my router at least once a day. I'm not sure which device on my home network is causing the problem, but I have three wireless NAP's, a print server and an 8-port switch. If you figure out your problem, let me know.
