OT Dual Layer Burn issues

I have searched with little result so I am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction, please.

I have just bought the SONY DVD RW AW-G170A drive and the full version of Nero 7.

I purchased a few Bulkpaq Printable **Dual Layer**(2.4x) DVD+Rs to use.

My first attempt at burning a movie with Nero Vision 4 appeared successful but when played either in my or my wife's PC or my parent's SONY DVD player we get a lot of jittering plus the audio constantly goes in and out of sync.

The movie is 12 hours 12 minutes long and is set at Excellent Quality 7.77 of 7.95GB.

Can anyone offer some possible solutions or where to look for causes of these issues. Could it be down to the media?

Cheers

When you burn single layer disks... you can burn just about any crap you want and get away with it. But DL disks are quite different. You should use nothing but the best quality you can get your hands on.

T.Y. are good, as well as Verbatim. In fact, I burn a lot of DL hd-dvd's and nothing less than verbatim will work at all.

(I'm assuming the "12hours, 12 minutes" is wrong and you meant 2 hours 12 minutes)

I've come to the conclusion, which is apparently common knowledge on the Internet, that Nero does single-layer great but double-layer poorly.

I don't use DVD-A to author, but instead work with Maestro and, more recently, DVDLabPro2. In either case, I make sure my VIDEO_TS folder is under 7.8GB, use only Verbatim DVD+R DL media (either plain or inkjet-printable), and do the actual burning with CopyToDVD, which does a terrific job with Double Layer. It is also essential that the booktype is set to DVDrom--my NEC DVD burners do this automatically.

With about 100 of these full double layer disks out there, not a single playability issue so far.

You have me there. Why should it be set to DVDROM or is this specific to CopyToDVD?

I had simply burned the movie without ever watching it assuming it to have been rendered properly in the first place.

I decided to watch it for myself and, lo & behold, simply watching the mpg in WMP & PowerDVD showed that the audio was constantly in & out of sync.

So, maybe I don't have to throw away the DL DVDs I already have.

I'll try a test soon with one of my own projects.

Usually audio drifting in and out of sync means you are using variable bit rate (VBR) compression rather than constant bit rate (CBR) compression. VBR is supposed to work without losing sync, but when things go wrong, CBR is less prone to sync problems.

Maverick:

I'm no expert at this booktype stuff, but as I understand it, older DVD players expect certain types of disks. There is a bit that the burner can set on DVD+R disks that tells the player the kind of disk it is, and apparently for DVD+R DL it is especially useful to pretend that the disk is not a burned one but actually a DVD-Rom disk.

My understanding is that many DVD burners automatically set this bit when DVD+R burning. Perhaps other on this board who know more about this can elaborate.

Some info here.
