OT: DV / DVCAM playback deck recommendations???

I've been using a Panasonic AG-DV2500 for tape playback and capture. Unfortunately, Vista and Windows 7 will not support the deck.

Is there a compatible replacement deck in the same price range? My recollection is that I paid around 2 grand for it.

Over time I expect to replace most of my cameras with new ones that record on solid state or disc based media so I don't want to spend 7 or 8 grand on a replacement deck.

I have been using a SONY DSR-25 deck for years and cannot fault it.
When I bought it over 8 years ago it was around $CAD4.5K.

We just got the new HVR-M25PA and it handles everything including the tapes from the Canon and JVC cameras recorded in progressive. You can save a bit and loose a little convenience with the HVR-M15PA. Same as the M25 but no LCD screen and not as much i/o. If you normally have a monitor connected to your VCR and only need it to capture over firewire thenwhat you loose is nothing for a saving of $1,000.

Note that almost no Sony VCR can handle DVCPro tapes though.

In the early days of DV Sony had a DV deck in a PC 5.25" diskette drive form factor (same as a CD/DVD drive) for direct mounting in a PC. It was a barebones device for capturing and I suppose writing DV tapes. I have many times regretted not having gotten one when the getting was good. IIRC it was around a grand, but that was when a CD burner ran $500.

i remember that deck as well! i chased around like a blue-assed fly trying to get one, but was met with either 'never heard of it', or they're on back order.

did ANYONE ever get one?

I have a nice JVC deck that has done me solid for YEARS. I'll look up the model number tomorrow when I am in the office.

The 3 cheapest options I can think of would be:

Depending on your needs, I would say:
DSR-11 or one of those 'Clam-Shell' decks.

If you're only shooting 'small format' tapes you could probably get away with using a cheap DVCamera via Firewire.
