OT: DVD media burning issue

vitalforce wrote on 3/31/2006, 9:00 PM
Anyone else having this issue? I had bought Maxell 8x DVD-R discs and they burned via DVDA3 (and Nero 6) at 12x by default. Not a hitch. Have an internal Pioneer AO8, 16x16, current firmware.

Recently resupplied and bought Memorex DVD-Rs labeled as 16x but they only burn at 4x?

Is there that much variation in the quality of these mfrs' media?

If so, what about TDKs? (I bought at J&R Computer World, Manhattan and the choices are TDK, Sony, Memorex and occasionally Maxell when in stock.)

The discussion is meaningless because you are talking about brand names instead of media ID code. There can be as many as six or eight different companies that produce media for each of them.

I have found the Memorex quality to be very iffy. I avoid them.

John is right: you can't tell much just by look at the name brand. You need to use DVD Decrypter or some other tool that will actually read the media ID on the blank media. This will tell you (most of the time) what you've really got.

I too found that Memorex DVD+RW disks (Media ID: RITEK-008-00) labeled 8x are only recognized by my Pioneer DVR-109 at 2.4x. A real disappointment because I bought a bunch of them after I found that I can burn +RW much faster than -RW which makes a huge difference when creating test DVDs prior to the real burn. The Sony 4x DVD+RW (Disc ID: RICOHJPN-W11-01), which I can no longer get, worked great.
