OT: DVD ripping software

I worked for this company for which i shoot tons of interviews for various TV shows. I asked if i can have some of the footage for my reel. And in all their wisdom they sent me DVDs containing full episodes of the show... Asking them to send me the data DVD will take another few months for them to respond so most likely i'll have more luck by ripping the DVDs they sent me and cutting some of the stuff they shot.

So i'm looking for a ripping software that can create a Vegas friendly file (most use some kind of MPEG4 or what not that can't be easily playable in Vegas or they constrain the video file to 320x240... or... many other limitations). Anyone has good luck with a no non-sense software that does what it suppose to do?

If the DVD has no copy protection, you can just use the build in import feature in Vegas.

If it is protected, you can use DVD shrink to get data out of it, but of of course be aware of any copyrights.

I used this for a client some time ago, and it worked perfectly.

Sometimes, using the Import DVD Disc utility in Vegas, you end up with video and audio out of sync, and the ends of the .vobs don't match. This can be a real PITA.

I don't recall ever having a problem with DVD Shrink, and it's options are highly configurable, like being able to reduce a DL down to SL size while maintaining pretty good quality.

If you have the Quicktime MPEG decoder, try MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5. Very good at ripping and creating MPEG-2 TS files, and can transcode to other formats quickly and with high quality. Did I mention it's free?
