OT; Encouraging our young talent

My daughter has entered a contest for a Shakespeare interpretation still or video. She would not do the video as she felt she could not do it justice and had an attempt at the still using Photoshop for the first time. I would like some of the forum members to have a look at her entry and comment constructively on your opinion as to how she performed. I would like her to put in her video work as I think she could do it justice and make her feel she is not out of her depths. It will be done in Vegas and I would like to think that her imagination can be expressed in video as well. This is the site, click gallery, and it is under her name Alison Phillips( use the 15 years age search, as the name search does not work) . Please be kind.

For a still, there's plenty of drama there Mike! Looks great - just tell her that for video she can do it as many times as she wants till she feels she's done it justice, and you can shoot different lines from different angles/zooms, which will allow you to join parts of different takes.

Good luck.

Quite impressive for a young 15 year old

Lots of tension and ambience and good composition
‘ is this taken from alas poor yorick I knew him hooray “ from Hamlet

Well I could just imagine how creative she will be with video, hope we get to see some stuff

The quote was from Othello but where I haven't a clue. I studied Shakesfear.
The video is looking more promising as the confidence rises.

Shakespear ,Shaka zulu’s, they just stabbed you different ways

and they are both responsible for a lot of confusion

The photo is great. Shows good ideas and if that's her first go at using PS she's doing very well. I'm no art critic so I can't offer much more on the photo but it certainlt grabbed my attention.

as for the video, try to limit your input to technical advice, let it be her video. If she gets something wrong, I think she'll know soon enough. As she learns to trust her judgement that's what'll raise her confidence. It wouldn't surprise me if in some ways her reluctance to do the video was because she knew her father would be involved, she's probably at that age.

Man.... the only think my kid thinks about is those stupid video games! It's so bad I have had to issue time restrictions on his machine.

He does well in school, and is in Cadets so at least I don't have to worry about where he is on Friday nights... but i sure wish I could get him to play a more active roll in creativity!

All I did with my daughter was just show her what could be done with photos and videos and a little bit of work afterwards. She tried some photos with Giff just playing around with colour curves and got the bug. Video came next and she has concentrated on learning the nuts and bolts of the software from tutorials and this is her first photo manipulation work and hopefully a crack at the video which I helped her shoot (totally under alisons directorship).
I think you have to sow the seed of interest and then stand back and watch what happens, answer questions without being judgemental and promote their efforts where they want. After all it is their creativity and it is so satisfying to be part of that process.
Thanks for the encouragement, it has really helped her confidence.
