have simple generic firewire card, working happily with camera, etc., am thinking of getting an external drive - would one work off same card at the same time, ie, could i capture direct to it?
if so, suggestions for drive (don't need more than 160gig)
Generally, yes, you can have both on one card. This varies by system, depending on resources available/allocation. Some of us use two cards, one for the cam and one for the drive, but I frequently use one card, and on my laptop, the only time I use a second card is for when I'm using DV Rack, which doesn't like to share resources at all.
yes, you can capture to the drive as well. (in most cases)
And oddly enough, the only way I could get the DSR-11 and an external drive to work off my VAIO was to have them on the same firewire port. I'm suspecting it has more to do with the el cheapo firewire PCMCIA card I picked up in the computer fleamarket in Teipei than any generic reason as to why it didn't work off seperate ports.
Some of the older Sony gear though I find likes to be the ONLY firewire device on the system, things like DSR-30 that were probably first generation firewire devices.
Also I've tried a few firewire encolsures and they all have their own peculiarities. In general avoid ones that look they belong on a G5, i.e. NO fans.
