OT - first RED cameras are scheduled to roll out

Looks like the first 50 RED cameras are scheduled to roll off the line by September. While they apparently wont have all the "bells and whistles" available as yet, they will be functional enough, "to shoot a feature".

Congrats to those of you who have put yer money down. Time to start seriously saving.

Jannard sold Oakley and netted (they say) just over a billion dollars, so we can assume the RED camera will be sucessfully completed.

Our SI-2K should be in our hands in two weeks, all features working. If only I could squeeze the footage through Vegas I'd be really happy.

I say that and yet I just got back from the closing night of the Sydney Film Festival and the biggest prize ($10K) went to the best short film shot on a mobile phone. Only 60 secs long and could have easily been done in Vegas. It was damn clever and the guy deserved the prize and the gag probably wouldn't have worked so well if it was shot on anything other than a mobile phone.

Check it out here:

farss, the humor is just great. You could use the new SI-2k, and just pixel the final cut!

Any way, grads on the SI-2K! :-) Would love to test the baby! guess you'll be buying a lot of disk drives!

Not at all, the camera records using the Prospect 2K codec from Cineform, a 160GB USB drive hold around 3.5 hours. That's 2K 10bit log 4:4:4. If Grazie reads this he'll be thrilled to know that a thumb drive can hold the equivalent of 1 reel of a 35mm print.

Where I will be buying LOTS of drives is if we have to ouput to DPX, that's a truly scary amount of data.

But heck, once we get the camera and some primes if you're down this way.....

Based on the current schedule, I don't get mine till Jan 08. Hmmm I'm wondering how close Vegas 64bit will be to releasing.Probably won't matter since we still don't know if it will support >8bit per channel color.

Farss, are you getting the mini or the whole kit?
