Hey folks,

I am beta testing FLIX Pro 5.0 which is the new flash encoder
for the soon to be released Flash 8. Flix Pro was bought out by
On2 Technologies from Wildform.

I did a side by side comparison. I took a 5 minute .mpeg2 file
and encoded for streaming at 500 kb/s with version 4 and flash 7

Results = great video and 22,000 kb file size

Same file encoded for streaming at 200 kb/s with version 5 and flash 8.

Results = even better video and 8,000 kb file size!

Conclusion: If you want great streaming video at a smaller file size
and smaller streaming size AND reach 98% of the
internet users, then On2 Flix Pro 5.0 and Flash 8 is
the way to go!

Flash 8 from Macromedia will be released later this summer
and Flix Pro 5.0 encoder will be released at the same time!

Hey do you know if macromedia is updating any of their other products ?
(I use Fireworks a lot and I'm really scared they will phase it out if Abobe buys them out...)

thanks for the heads up, I use flixpro for all my encoding too .. nice to know that filesize reduction - wow...

right re fireworks, I'm also concerned that it will disappear .... I've used it daily for 4+ years, great program.. agree re adobe... don't like photoshop since it takes forever to load... fireworks is fast..

I personnaly use both photoshop and fireworks but for very different tasks. I use Fireworks to edit web graphics, mostly vector / layout stuff. I use photo shop to correct photos... I think the 2 programs are very different and serve a different purpose. Adobe has image ready which is their equivalent to Fireworks but it sucks big time...
