OT: Food Network using Sony HDV cam?

ScottW wrote on 6/22/2005, 7:33 PM
I just caught a promo on Food Network for the "reality" show they've got going "The Next Food Network Star" and in all of the shots that show a camera, well, it sure looks like the new Sony HDV (says "Sony HDV" on the side when I freeze framed it). Inspecting the other shots with a camera shows a similar camera profile in each one.

Anyone else notice this, or am I just seeing things?

Why is that noteworthy?
I can only speak for down here but we're replacing all our prosummer cameras with Z1s and even our national broadcaster is embracing them, they're so cheap they can send someone OS with one without worrying about it.

That's good to know. I didn't realize that any broadcast networks were embracing these cameras. I've been toying with the idea of a purchase for awhile, and it certainly helps if I can tell the nay-sayers that if "Food Network is using them, then it's good enough for me."

I'll work on keeping my OT posts more noteworthy in the future ;-)

MTV has a boatload of them. We trained them in how to use the camera. You'll find the Sony HDV cameras in lots of places you wouldn't expect them. But always nice to hear of more 'widespread' use of them.

My apologies, your post is very apt. There's been an aweful lot of bulldust kicked up over Sony's HDV cameras, one can only conclude that sales of them are hurting someones bottom line.
The thing that really bugs me is this. A few years ago Panasonic unleashed the DVX100 and no question about it, that scorched anything Sony had to offer at that price point. Now what did Sony do about it, did they unleash their minions to spread rumour and inuendo, no. They took the hit, sharpened their pencils and got on with the job of a) learning, b) building something better. Bravo, that's how free enterprise is supposed to work.
If you were to believe half the negative rumours about these cameras you'd be led to conclude they basically had no place in the world of real video. Sad thing is for those silly enough to swallow that line is that there's a lot of serious production going on using these cameras.
I'm NOT saying that you have to rush out and buy a Z1, but if you think you'd benefit from what one has to offer and you've got the work and the budget to justify the expenditure, make the effort to draw your own conclusions.
So far I'm very happy with what we've been able to get done with them, there wasn't any other single camera that could have pulled off the job.
Bob.
