When I got my Canon XA-10 last year I noticed it has a switch to remove the IR-blocking filter from the optical path. A couple of days ago I remembered I wanted to experiment with it and bought a 58mm 950 nm IR filter on eBay for $US 20.
Switching the camera into IR mode puts iris and shutter speed (though not focus) into automatic. The image displayed is black and white. Enough light gets through the filter (which looks to be pitch black) to shoot indoors with daylight coming through the windows. Some surprises -- most black fabric isn't (looks gray or white), but some is. Looking outside, trees have white leaves, and if it weren't raining today, I know the sky would be black.
Anyway, I look forward to messing around with this. I urge anyone else with an XA-10 to get an IR filter and check it out! Cheap fun!
