OT: FX1/Z1U Output from timeline

I'm confused. After you ingest HDV footage into your Vegas 6 timeline, can you play from the timeline and monitor externally on an HDTV via the FX1 in real-time?

Pre-NAB I thought that you couldn’t use the FX1 to preview on an external HDTV. But then I heard that you could in fact use the FX1/Z1U just like we use our regular DV equipment to preview from the timeline to an external monitor in HD.

I’m just trying to get my facts straight before I spring for the FX1 or Z1U.

Thanks in advance!
Jeff

I dont know about the Z1 but you cannot send the external preview from firewire into the FX1 HDV/DV port and then have that signal output on the component jack to get 1080i siganl out of the FX1.
std DV in- to- composite or s-vid out only.

The only ways to monitor HD in most any app right now, is to:
a. Have a Blackmagic HD card with component out, feeding an HD monitor.

b. Have a second LCD monitor that you can use the Secondary Display feature of Vegas 6.

c. Use a BlackMagic HD/SDI output, feeding an HD CRT monitor. (there might be a flat panel that accepts SDI, but other than the Sony with the breakout box, I've not seen one.

Expect to see some future improvements of this workflow soon, but there aren't a lot of choices for HD Monitoring to an external. Firewire can't carry the HD stream to the Z1, and the Z1 display that signal in real time. The DV workflow that you're familiar with can't apply to HD/HDV at this time, and likely never will.

Thanks guys!

Nothing comes cheap or easy, huh?

Option a would cost about $1500 + HD mon
option b would only cost the price of a 2nd monitor and dual head card
option c would be $500 + the cost of an SDI monitor... +2,000 (just a guess)

Sounds like option 'b' is the winner!

On the LCD side of things, Dell has a 24" 1920x1200 for under $1000 that has component ins, as wells as vga and dvi... I just got an ad in the mail today, I think it's normally $1200 (US).

This seems like the perfect solution... I could hook up the FX1 directly using the component ins on the LCD, then switch to VGA for the Vegas secondary preview!

Still a bit pricey, though.

Thanks again,

Jeff

If you can find a CRT-HD monitor for $1500.00, please let me know of it.

No, HD ain't cheep. No matter how you look at it.

Me too, down here you're talking $35K and then you either learn how to do it yourself or pay someone to regularly tweak the thing. There are some cheaper Sony monitors that'll accept HD component but they're nowhere near adequate resolution for you to see 1080 in all its glory.
