What is your "Views" setting? I don't see thumbnails until it's set to at least 'Medium Icons'.

Hi Terry,

If you go to "organize" just to the left of "views", select "folder and search options" and then the "view" tab.
The top option is "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
Is this ticked? If so untick it and you should get your thumbnails back.

There are various other settings there such as hiding extensions and in theory you can apply the settings to all folders.

However, one of the things that drives me crazy about Vista is these settings don't stick. It will suddenly decide to show everything in a folder as large icons or something else equally annoying.

I have yet to discover a permanent solution to this.
Anyone? :-)

That's Vista conflicting with another program.... something that Microsoft has not been able to figure out yet. Lots of info on the net about this.... a few fixes too.

Thanks Blink, ;-)

It looks like Explorerview from sdsoftware might be the solution.

Download it from here:

With regards to making settings stick - try running an instance of explorer as administrator.

It will allow some more settings to stay as you set them. There are some issues some settings still not being remembered though - but this did help me a lot with a few. It's UAC being a pig (I keep it on, as despite it's aggrevation, I'd rather be safer than sorry).

I cannot get "THumbnails" to show up as an option. What am I missing. All I can get is icons with different sizes.
BTW I did uncheck the "Always show icons, never thumbnails" choice.

Another problem is that I cannot play the captured clips by choosing them on the hard drive. I get the Windows does not recognize the file type disclaimer. Windows media player will not play them.I can take the clip into Vegas 8.1 and there will be thumbnails in the Vegas explorer and Vegas will play the clip.

Hi Terry,

What are "the captured clips"?
From what source?
What file extension do they have?

I suspect windows does not have the correct codec installed which would answer the playback and thumbnail problems.

More info needed.

The captured clips are from FX1 (HDV) m2t. They are being captured on a Vista 64bit system with Vegas 8.1.
Thanks for the response.

Vista doesn't generate thumbnails for M2T (not on its own anyway). I know Windows 7 has this problem solved though. WMP in Windows 7 has been stepped up pretty good and if you make it the default player, thumbnails for M2T, TS, MTS, and M2TS will be generated.

I have done very few HDV projects (and only this one on Vista). But it seems that when I used XP (32) that thumbnails for m2t were generated. Am I remembering correctly and is this another giant step backwards for Vista??
