OT: Getting Good Movies

I've come to the conclusion that if you rate movies honestly at NetFlix, you will have cornered yourself so that you keep getting more of the same.

As a test, I'm going to rate everything randomly from now on.

Someone recommended "The Usual Suspects" in another post, and I love Kevin Spacey and "Mind Bender" storylines, yet it's never been offered to me and when I searched for it, it said "Best guess for me - 2 stars".

OK, hey, it's streaming too! I'm going to watch it now. TTFN

Have you noticed that some peanut butter is smooth and some is crunchy? I tell you what I do. I go to the peanut butter aisle and I close my eyes and spin myself around until I feel goofy. Then I keep my eyes closed and just reach out and grab a jar. Then I do the same thing in jelly aisle. Then I run home as fast I can to keep that goofy feeling going and only when I have the bread all ready do I look at what I bought. Man, I have had some crazy peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in my day.

This is a great approach.
We get free tickets to the Sydney Film Festival as we're a sponsor but apart from opening & closing nights getting to see any of the movies is first come first served and we don't get the tickets till the first day by which time all the popular movies are sold out. So we just take what we can and indeed we get to see some gems:

Fados:. Just beautifully shot, a real cinematographers movie. Simple ideas done extremely well and great music and dancing that I would never have seen otherwise. Best seen from a 35mm print, it is all about the colors and the lighting and I don't know how well it'll work on the small screen.

I Bring What I Love: The story of Youssou Ndour's struggle to wrestle with his music in the world of Islam and to get the centre of Islamic thinking more towards Africa. Worth a watch for the story from a part of the world that's rarely in the headlines.


So I've thrown in two of my 'found' gems, how about some more. Not your greatest movies of all time, rather the ones you stumbled upon by chance.

I'm going to see those because "The Usual Suspects" was great so far, I've only seen half of it. Sure do love those heist movies.

My two gems are:

"The Hot Spot" - Don Johnson / Virginia Madsen*

"Body Heat" - William Hurt / Kathleen Turner*
