OT: Going 64 bit Vista, need print server

TeetimeNC wrote on 12/1/2008, 8:34 AM
I've ordered a new i7 Quad with Vista 64 to replace my aging video pc. One of the things I need to upgrade is my print server - it has quit working. It will be handling printing services for two XP pcs and two Vista pcs.

Are there any unique Vista 64 requirements I need to be aware of when getting a new print server? I ask because many of the print servers list compatible OS's, but none that I have found specfically list Vista 64.

If your printers work with the Vista 64 drivers (iow, connected directly to the machine), chances are 99% that they will work with almost any print server connected to a 10/100 TCP/IP home network. Your router should recognize it and set it up without complaint. The only thing that "might" be an issue is installing the admin interface files, but if so they could probably be run in compatibility mode. Speaking generally here, I have no knowledge of particular print servers under V64.

I use a dlink dpr-1260 wireless print server to run 3 xp machines and 1 vista 64 machine. No issues here.

Boy, am I eating crow over my last post!
I installed an older parallel print server on my home network and every time I turned on my Vista notebook the whole network and internet connection went down!
After lots of playing with the notebook network settings (I thought I had done something wrong), I finally unplugged the print server and the problem went away on the next reboot.
Turns out there are updated Vista drivers for this device.
Just goes to show where making assumptions can get you, and the pitfalls of offering untested advice. My bad.

I wanted to add, I have an Epson r320 and a Bravo Disc Publisher II hooked up to it. Both printers work great through the server (although I can't use the burner in the Bravo II this way).
