OT: good DVDs to own

A couple years back I saw Yank Tanks at a festival.

I just learned I can now order it on DVD from Amazon, Barnes & Nobel, Tower Records, etc. It was really fun, so I intend to.

If I am going to order a DVD online, I thought I might as well add to my library and make a decent order. I have a lot of DVDs, but am probably missing some of the classics.

Suggestions, please... What prime cinematography classics or otherwise noteworthy ground breaking, or educational (in the sense of my learning) films might I add to my collection?

Hope we all can benefit from the suggestions.

I've gota make a plug for a llocal guy who makes documentaries about local stuff. His latest doc was called "Shoot the Moon." I heard it was very good. However, he uses FCP. :)

Here's a good reference for Best Cinematography Internet Movie Data Base.

Hope this helps!

For Cinematography, you have to own Days of Heaven directed by Terence Malick and shot by Nestor Almendros

You should also own the documentary, Visions of Light, which has interviews with dozens of cinematographers and tons of gorgeous film clips.

Every film maker should see Visions of Light. Once you see that, you'll know why you should own Days of Heaven
