OT: "good" mic with mini jack connector? - is the AT899 able to be done that way?

The question is there, I ordered some equipment but the guy didn't quite get what I was asking for, and he sent the wrong stuff, so I'm gonna have to get it replaced and I was wondering if there was a good mic that I can plug into an I-River? (The 899 comes with a long power suppier that converts it to XLR, that's not gonna help me much with an I-River - but is there a good solution for the i-rivers?)

The 899 won't work without that long tube, it holds the battery that phantom powers the mic. But, you can buy an XLR to 3.5mm adapter for about 10.00. That's all you'll need for the iRiver.

I have read many positive things about these.

In addition, there are good models available from Reactive Sounds and The Sound Professionals.

There is lots of information available that can be applied to the iRiver on the Minidisc.org website. A MD Recorder has the same interfaces.

I you want an easy stereo setup I'd happily recommend an Audio Technica AT-822. It comes with both XLR and miniplug cables, is self-powered by a AA cell, contains two audio pickups angled out 90 degrees (I think), and the response curve is pretty flat. About $200-250.

I asked this same question a few weeks back and did mega research. The bottom line is there are few if any good, defined as semi-pro/top hobbisy mini jack mics - but this is no big deal. Get the mic you want in XLR and use a $9 impedance transformer. I assume you know that good mics with good cables have to be LOW impedance to preserve signal quality, while the small mini-jacks are HIGH impedance, hence the need for the transformer/converter. They need no power and are the size of your thumb. I use the Sure model A96F with the Electrovoice dynamic omni model 635A and a 25' XLR cable. A good solid interview/general purpose combo for under $100! nuf sed

that looks pretty kickass...and just what I've been looking for. do you have any idea where the best prices can be found for the 635A and the A96F?

thanks

B&H are pretty big dealers of both EV and Shure (and everything else)
Give Kendall Scott a call over there, tell him you heard about him on the Sony forum, I'll bet he gets you a slammin' deal.
