OT: Great artists cut down in their prime

p@mast3rs wrote on 1/16/2005, 3:33 PM
I realize this is a bit off topic, but going through my music collection, I came across an artist who was truly a pioneer who was so far ahead of his time, it was unbelievable. I couldnt remember how he died so I did a web search and found out the reason (murdered in an alley.)

Roger Troutman was truly an amazing artist in every since. From Computer Love to I Want To Be Your Man to More Bounce to the Ounce. It is truly scary what else he could have accomplished had he not been cut down in his prime. All the talkboxes and rip off vocoder sounds today were directly influenced by this man (I know vocoders were used in the 70's, Frampton among others.)

It just makes me sad when I think about what kind of ear candy we all would be enjoying today if the likes of Lennon, Gaye, Troutman, Morrison, Bonham. etc... weren't cut down well before their prime.

Whats even sadder for me, Troutman didnt live too far from where I live and I believe the studio he recorded at is still in use today.

For those that have never heard his music, I urge you to check it out. His son, is just as talented. I have seen him once and that kid has the potential to be better than his dad. Scary good.

Sorry for the off topic, just felt sad and wanted to share my joy for his work.

Frampton used a talk box, Not the same as a vocoder.
to be even further off the subject.

I was pretty sure that Frampton used the vocoders but I could be wrong. I thought I remembered an interview with him talking about using a vocoder. Hmm, learn something new every day.

How about Stevie Ray Vaughan? Now that man could play the blues. He could pick a guitar like no other.

Eva Cassidy. Jeff Buckley. Before their prime, sadly.
I know nothing of Troutman. Thanks for the head's up.

But what's more interesting is how many of them are still alive.

Bobby Darrin, Richie Valens, Lynard Skynard, Ricky Nelson, John Lenon, and many others. Music is a dangerous game.

I believe Jeff Beck had that 'talk box' before Frampton, I saw him use one in concert before the Frampton album came out, but he never used it on anything famous, before Frampton's album made it . I think I miss Jimi Hendrix as the one of the most gifted, cut down. What an imagination. Cut down, may be an understatement.

Now that was a shocker.....people are just f***ing nutz!!!! Some insane fan was upset that Pantera was broken up, so he goes to Dimebag Darrell's new bands concert, pulls out a pistol, jumps on stage and starts shooting the band. WTF!?

and they say, "It's only rock and roll"

It's a shame anytime people are lost when they had so much more to give.
If you add actors, you'd increase this list dramatically.
River Pheonix, John Belushi, James Dean...
