Want to start with 20-30 videos, length anywhere from 15 – 60 minutes each
Footage will be std def and some HD
Will want 5-20 markers (or chapter points) in each video with names on each marker
The video's will be listed in a sortable format with the chapters or markers also listed for each video.
This will be in some sort of scrollable window.,
From time to time, you will add more video with markers.
Location and access of video
Master copy on server only avail to admin. Mirrored or duplicate copy on server for local access and also available to copy to a computer hard drive or usb/ firewire drive. Maybe 6-25 computers will want access.
Possible Web access for those with maximum bandwidth. (this whole thing may end up with a web interface regardless if it's on the web, network, or hard drive.
Updating or adding video's
Unsure at this time, but probably either monthly or quarterly.
Decisions to be made.
I'm leaning towards
Web/HTMl interface for access from PC's, Mac OSX, and Linux.
Media Types I'm considering.
Flash
h.264
WMA
Looking for what might last the longest in terms of compatibility as this footage will be relevant for 50-100 years or more;.
Will probably not have a large budget to re-purpose the media into another format down the road.
The changing to a different format in 10, 20 , or 30 years might not be the problem, it's getting the markers or chapter points to transfer and then having the ability to jump to the video and chapter/marker points without having to go through an expensive or time consuming reprogramming project.
Questions
Does H.264 work with markers the same as flash or windows media?
Which format would lend itself to less programming or authoring for finding the markers?
How involved is action script to learn for Flash ?
Will it work the same for H.264 in a flash player?
In action script, can you create one script to apply to all the videos?
In action script, can I make an automatic index listing for all the markers in a video without having to hard code the whole thing?
There may be times when an older video needs to have a new marker(s) added.
Which format might lend itself to being around for the longest time? Best guess?
One of the things I like about WMA playback, is in the windows player, if there are chapter points, you can get to them from the view>markers pull down and see a list of marks without any additional programming. Export with markers in Vegas and at least you have a way to navigate with no extra programing.
Doesn't anyone know if you view windows media on a Mac, can you get to a view> markers window?
I could go on, but will stop as I've asked too many questions already.
I'm much appreciative for any who want to leave their opinion.
