Uhh dont know what just happened there, but it self posted while typing......

Anyway, they gave me the hard drive, all images are captured in jpeg format I guess. But when I installed the drive into a ext firewire case it shows as not being initialized and all space unallocated on the disk.I think perhaps the dvr machine it was used in was a linux based system.
Bottom line if I initialize the disk will it remove the contents? like a format? I definatly dont want to be responsible for accidentaly erasing the evidence.
do you think I should just give it back to them and let them figure a way to get the images to a disk i can read.

The message means the OS cannot read the disk. There may be third party tools that would let you read it.

Since you referred to the data as evidence. I would not take the risk. I would return the drive to them.
