OT: HD-DVD purchase question (not player)

I just bought "Hot Fuzz" on DVD. Inside was a little flyer advertising HDDVD. It said that all HDDVD's include HD on one side & DVD on another. Is that true? Does EVERY HD DVD include SD DVD for DVD players on the other side? If so that's awesome... I'd start buying HDDVD's instead of DVD's for movies I like so I can get a duel format player later.

Yes, it is true.

HD DVD can do this because it is a similar physical structure to a dvd. Blu Ray has a different physical structure... it's thinner than a dvd and must have a protective scratch coat placed on it so it's impossible to combine dvd/blu ray.

Most of the newer movies that HD DVD back will and are starting to come out this way. I think it's a great deal!

Universal the first big studio to go this way I believe, it was a plan to increase HD sales and lower warehousing cost. Gluing two media together is not new. But Blink4times is wrong about bluray not being able to be glued together. Last Year's Tech conf, a new gluing tech was intro demonstrating bluray+DVD, blu+HD-DVD, --------- this is why the dual format drives are hot button issues because the drives can handle more spin weight. This was one of the considerations(off the record) that delay the PSP3, was allowable spin weight of media. This has many issues, baring wear, wobble tolerate- this is the real killer. But most Bluray clients feels that continuing DVDs is just helping the pirate production houses.

SOME of the titles are released in dual format and some are not. Personally it sometimes annoys me as I already own the SD DVD title and am paying extra for something I already have. It also seems that the titles that "skip" on a lot of people's HD DVD players are the dual format titles. That may be a coincidence, but some members on the AVS forums have pointed it out. Most of the ones I have purchased have not skipped and those that have were BOTH HD DVD only and dual format. The dual format idea I think is strictly a money making effort although in your case it may be a good idea since you don't own an HD DVD player. They cost an average of around $30 - $40 per title. Single HD DVD titles average between $20 - $26.
