PC running Dual AMD 2600 procs on a A7M266D MoBo: When running Norton System works' Speed Disk a high pitched sound sqeaks a few times and then starts beeping and then becomes a long tone and then..and then...the blue screen of error!

This is the only time this happens..when running Norton SystemWorks' Speed Disk.

Is this a HD going bad? It's the C: drive, WD 120GB Caviar.

Speed disk is the Norton defragmenter. If you hea weird sounds when it's running it could be a bad drive, or just some bad section. The funny thing is it isn't suppose to be able to run at all, not even start up if there are disk errors, which it is suppose to check for first.

If you have other Norton tools, try to run those to check the disk itself BEFORE running speed disk.. Better just run Windows built in discheck which should repair cross linked files, stuff like that, which could be the problem.

Down load the free program from IBM the "Disk Fitness Test" I have used it several tome to correct some HD problems. It does a reliable test. Installs on a floppy and runs in DOS mode at boot up. You can get it from the IBM-Hitachi web site.
