What I want to know is how he got HDV of Lord of the Rings and on what media is it being delivered? Has HDDVD already come out and I missed it?

He used WinDVD to capture the SD DVD images. That program "optimizes" the video for PC playback quite a bit, wonder how that factors in.

Hasn't LOTR been on broadcast HDTV already? That could be the source (over the air for best quality, not via cable or satellite).
