hmmmm, this is starting to get pricey.

Sometimes NDA sucks. :-)

No reasonably priced suggestions, eh?
What forum is this question appropriate?
Hmmm... What about for a edit monitor? Guess I'll search the archives for that?

I think what Spot is suggesting is that something is coming out real soon, probably at NAB.

When he mentions NDA, that's a non-disclosure agreement, which you have to sign when you examine a product before the company releases it.

So he's not saying anything, but by putting his hand over his mouth and hopping up and down, he sure looks like he wants to say something.

The other day a friend told me some juicy gossip about her and swore me to secrecy. Can't even tell my gf who would find it hysterical. It's probably the same feeling. Except I don't think my friend is ever going to reveal this secret at least not anytime soon.

This may already have been addressed, but what about using an hp2335 23" lcd with its component jacks? You'd still need a power supply, but it would be pretty light and portable I'd think.

BusterKeaton - D'OH! I should know what NDA meant. I just didn't associate that at the time. I'm a dope.
Sooooo, thanks for the heads up Spot - you sly dude. I'll go ahead and hold my breath! (I hate holding my breath.)
And, thanks musman. I'll look into that as well. But for field work, batterie power is pretty important in many cases. I'd be willing to bet there are possibilities though.

Thanks!

There are LOTS of battery powered HD monitors, but cost is a big factor in these. The Sony BVM 9” HD Monitor is a fairly common field monitor, but it's not cheap. I don't know the cost, but I rented one recently, it cost me 175.00 for the day. Looked AWESOME, but after I figured out how to set up the Z1 screen, it's not really necessary from my view. Sony did a killer job of setting up their LCD screen, combined with the Zoom Focus feature to check focus. (Get in the habit of checking focus often with HD)

Agreed. Those little LCD monitors are awesome. But I do a bit of jib work and will be doing more "steadycam" style shooting. It's difficult (for me) to keep an objective eye when I'm doing the shooting. I'm looking more at overall composition and steady movement; not, did that person look at the camera and such). And it's also difficult for me to simply trust the shooter when I'm directing. I like to have someone's eyes on a monitor who's only job it is to make sure the shot is "clean."
When I shoot solo, it's no big deal, but I find I get better quality when I have a dedicated viewer that I trust ("You had a bump in the middle of that shot, Matthew," or, "Your shot drifted at the end," etc.)
SD monitors won't cut it - even for simple composition viewing, will they? Will the Z1 output a simple NTSC signal via BNC? (We won't receive ours until the end of the month.)
Spot|DSE wrote on 2/3/2005, 1:09 PM
You can set up the Z1 to output a composite signal of 480i, yes. For comping, and for somewhat reasonable indication of lighting, a 16:9 monitor should work. I'll pull mine out and connect it to see what it really does. I've been monitoring on a Samsung for the moment, plus a projected image on our 12' screen. I don't have an HD CRT, and don't have plans to acquire one right now.

"You can set up the Z1 to output a composite signal of 480i, yes."
FANTASTIC! I only need to - literally - monitor output while shooting. Sounds like my Iki CRT field monitor isn't obsolete afterall! - yet...
Now all I will need is a decent editing monitor (I'm using a cheep-o flat screen TV presently).
Thanks for the uplift!

A flip out monitor will not cut it trying to do any serious lighing. Also on 90% of my shoots i have a director with her nose up a monitor , for shot compostion etc... i sure as hell dont want her over my shoulder lookin at a cam screen , geeez, gives me the creeps!! I am the king of impulse buying,, but ,, got a few things to iron out here before making the plunge. Glad to hear Spot has some info to be shared later on.

I'm whinning and fussing about the other "expensive " items we have to purchase to get into hdv at a productive level, cant even imagine what the small stations around the country are facing makng the switch to hd .
