OT helmet cam recommendation

Jeff_Smith wrote on 9/24/2008, 1:57 PM
I am interested in a high resolution motorcycle helmet cam with a flash memory type recorder and maybe something I could use for other things like snow skiing. I have googled around in circles and thought someone here could point me in a good direction. What is the highest resolution for a compact prosumer set up?

Thanks
Jeff

At IBC Sony announced a new HD helmet mountable camera with built in stereo mic. I assume it'll work with their memory based recorders. Probably Spot will chime in as I'm certain he'd have the details.

If you are looking for a budget solution, google for this:
ATC3K Action Camera and Helmet Cam by Oregon Scientific

They have two models, one is $89 the other is $129. If you get one, please let us see the results.

Seems it is 640 x 460 at 30fps, great bang for the buck. I would like to find out what options are available for a higher res setup. I read about about a VIO-POV.1, that's about $700 and got me thinking more about matching up a high quality bullet cam with some sort of compatible flash recorder. Thanks Steve.

EEK!! Run like hell. These cameras blow, and badly. Worth less than their already cheep price.

There are dozens of helmet models ranging from Bonehead (we use FTP's on bikes quite a bit, just last week at the World event/Larry Miller Sports Park, Skysystems USA, Cookie Composites, 2K Composites(Not my fave by any stretch) RAWA, Bowen, and ParaSport to name but a few.
Then we get into gas tank toppers, fender mounts, axle mounts yadayada.
Cameras? CX12, CX7, HC9, all really good helmet cams that won't strain the neck.

BTW, we rent this sort of setup to qualified personnel, with cams ranging from the smallest AVCHD to full tyler setups for EX on a helmet...

Why would you have the whole camera on your head?
Wouldn't you be better served by having just the camera which can be quite small on the helmet and the recorder in a backpack .

I can see possible issues with my suggestion for skydiving but for anything else it'd seem a better way to go.

At this point, the good bullet cams are very cost prohibitive, and don't save much weight. We've been experimenting with a pair of Iconix for an upcoming project, and find the two Iconix, for example, with the cable, tether, etc actually weigh just a hair more than a CX7, and while they of course do have a better image, you can buy several CX7s for the same cost.
Body packs also add additional risk, as the helmet is tethered to the body, and safety requires that the helmet be capable of a fast cutaway in all situations. It *is* attached to your head, after all.

Are there any bullet cams that are true HD that record to a tapeless recorder or flash memory that do not require an HD camcorder to record to?

I'll try to track down the Sony one for you. Should work with one of their CF recorders.
We had the old SD one that worked a treat with Sony's clamshell recorder and was powered from the recorder.
