OT: how about a little ego boost :)

Alright, so I'm more or less confident in the quality of work I provide in the price range that I provide it, but I did a few jobs for my local City Gov't that had their fair share of troubles, and while I'm sure the quality of production may not be spectacular, I didn't think they were all that bad (considering budgetary restraints).

Then (on their website) I saw that there was a new video up and it was one I hadn't done, so I checked it out, and I thought it had some GLARING problems with not nearly the production quality that I put into my previous videos. What I'm looking for is a little re-affirmation that I did better than this other person (eg. a little ego stroking).

If you have criticisms on the video's I did (the bottom ones) I'm going to require a 2-1 ratio of positive to critical comments :P

Let me also be clear that the budget for these video's was fairly low and so there will inherently be some quality issues as we couldn't rent a studio (for audio or video recording) and so on, I'll quit making excuses now.

(oh, and if you're wanting a reason for posting this beyond my craving a little ego boost, I saw mac stuff on their videos [road construction 2008 stuff] so how about we say this is a comparison of FCS vs. Vegas... I know I know that's like putting two different paint brushes in two different hands ( a master and an apprentice ) and then saying that one paint brush is better because it was used to make this painting which is better than the other painting :P ).

Thanks :)

Dave

That roadworks video is so dark I think I'll give Fargo a wide berth if I'm ever travelling that way. The graphics look pretty amateurish.
Sorry I haven't watched much of either of them, they're excessively large files. Offering such large files for download seems daft, why would anyone bother, they could be half the resolution.

OK. Well to echo the previous sentiment... I'm on a cable modem connection and the bus transit one took forever to buffer. I about lost patience. The video is, frankly, boring and does nothing to make me want to move to the town. I don't know what their goal was...

BTW. Your video (?? the last one) takes way too long to buffer as well. The Independence day one was much better. I didn't have time to sit through and watch all these. Sorry.

I'm not going to trash someones video , but 2 things to keep in mind , its a govt job.... low bid often gets the gig. And the client may be perfectly happy with it,

Sat through a meeting last week on a govt bid,,, client showed all the companies trying to win the bid, the video she was updating. Several people in the room were laughing outloud it was so bad.... . .At the end was a q and a session and the question was asked if she was happy with the previous video. Guess what,, she was.had no issues with it, and it served her purpose.

I've told them not to have such huge files, in fact I even offered to create smaller ones for them at no charge because they are just shooting themselves in the foot with those large files (I have a 7Mbit down connection and I can't even play through all the files all the time)

All but the road ones are jobs I did with their pre-written scripts ( information had to go through a LONG process of approval before I got to it, and changes were basically not allowed ). So as far as content, that was more or less out of my hands, I just shot for it, and edited. re. the puposes of the videos (ie the bus video) was just to teach people how to ride it and get them more informed on it, not really to sit there and say, look how great fargo is, we have a bus system (which would be a stupid way of promoting the city I think).

Thanks for the feedback folks, and good points of view all around.

I watched the road work video and the recycle video (start to finish) so right off the bat you owe me one Dave! :)

I have to say that the road work video was boring but then how exciting could it be? The recycle video was the better video with much higher production values. Better lighting, sharper image and better sound. I think the background for the title used for the persons could have been different. It seemed out of place and a bit over the top but other than that the recycle video was much better.

I think your work is far better than the others presented! You have been
listening here to the great suggestions others have offered over the years.

They need true streaming servers for such huge files. I think you have a city
that invested or operates the cable system and thinks EVERYONE must be
connected. But if you are thinking of moving there, you most likely will be
on a distant service or in a hotel room looking for s new home for the new job
you are starting.

"Look how great fargo is, we have a bus system..."

Sidenote:
My town used to have a bus system WITHOUT in your face advertisements.
Clean white buses with clean red interiors. As ridership changed due to
downtown businesses closing, buses now have interior signs and the outside
has been painted as moving billboards. The client ell now is too scary to mention.

As a friend, I would suggest watching your comments here, you might find out
your new competition has started using Vegas since your work has been seen!
