OT: How do I convert a DVCPROHD tape to HDV tape

Sidecar2 wrote on 10/16/2007, 11:35 AM
I have to capture an event using a Panasonic DVCPROHD camera and deliver HDV tape to the customer.

Current plan is to capture the DVCPROHD into Final Cut Pro, then master back to HDV tape. Yeah, I said Final Cut Pro.

I'd use Vegas if there was a way to capture DVCPROHD directly from a Panasonic deck or camera into Vegas.

Any better ideas?

We have both a Sony HVR-M10U HDV deck and a Panasonic AJ-HD1400 deck.

Both have Firewire ports but don't appear to talk to each other.

Something about oil and water not mixing....

I have Raylight installed. I can edit DVCPROHD if I can get it into my PC.

The problem is that Vegas cannot recognize the Panasonic HD1400 deck via the Firewire.

You should be able to do this in realtime.
Panny deck with HD SDI into HD SDI > HDV converter into HDV deck.

Roland do a HD SDI to HDV converter box and so do Convergent Design.

I think your plan makes the most sence considering that you already own the equipment. You should check on a good FCP forum to make sure you take the right sequence settings to get the best quality. You may not even have to render.

Farss,

That Roland/Edirol VC-300HD certainly looks like it would do the job. Saw one at the HD Expo last week. Downside: $9,500.00.

Final answer: rented a Sony Z1 and shot the event in HDV.

There you go. Otherwise, your plan to do it in FCP sounds like the answer. Vegas just can't control a DVC deck.

The other option might have been to spring for a Xena card and capture the DVCProHD footage via SDI. Not something I'd want to do under a deadline, though. The up side might be that you expand the capabilities of your Vegas system.

PPro can't control those decks either, but PPro with Axio can do it via firewire or SDI. Pretty much the same sort of scenario as Vegas.
