OT: How does this hosting deal sound?

craftech wrote on 9/30/2006, 10:32 AM
Moreweb is offering 50% off to Anandtech forum members. The coupon is a recurring discount so it is good for the life of the account. Comes to around $47.50 a year including domain registration.

They host the AnandTech website (which is pretty fast) and have links to other customer's websites that seem to work remarkably fast.

As they do not offer packages with any higher bandwidth does 50GB and 2000 MB of storage sound like enough for a videographers website?

John, I think StartLogic has them beat.

They work for me.

I'd suggest, first, to not buy your domain from the same place where you host your website. That makes it easier to move around to another server. I use godaddy.com for domain registration & find it easy to manage domains & inexpensive.

It's hard to say if the space offered (2GB Storage, 60GB Transfer) is sufficient without knowing how you are going to use this (personal, business, hosting multiple domains ...) . Remember that video files tend to be larger than other types -- if you are going to upload many then 2GB could run short. So, look also at the prices of upgrading space at the servers you are investigating; that half price discount to start might not hold on upgraded accounts . I use crystaltech.com and they've been reliable.

I like Globat. They usually have free deals for a year and then it's a pretty good price from then on. if anyone signs up and references day-vidsproductions.com I get some kind of credit or something. Anyway, just thought I'd mention it.

I have started to migrate some of my sites to Dreamhost. They have a lot of one-quick installs that I have been exploring (Joomla, WordPress etc...) They do have some amazing deals. If you go to the forum you can find promotional codes so you can get the best deals. I got that advice from this forum a while back and frankly I have been thrilled. I have not had any down time with my sites. They have a blog that keeps you in formed when they have outages and problems. This is very helpful and so far the stuff that gets posted is on servers other than the one my sites are on. No provider is bullet-proof but it is nice to know what is going on. They have streaming for quicktime. But I have seen a lot of forum posting for people who are hosting their video and audio files at free hosts and just displaying on their site. That way they do not get hit with the bandwidth charges for the streams. Using Joomla (www.joomla.org) with a plugin you can get this going.

Call their customer support and see how long you are put on hold. It dosn't really make a big differenc wheather you pay $50 or $100 per year what counts is that you are no dealing with shady company. I used to have my website with ipowerweb.com but they went down the toilet so far that i decided to switch to bluehost.com

I can't recommend GoDaddy enough. They have been the host of my web sites for a few years and they just keep getting better. I've never needed to talk to Customer Service, but my e-mail questions have been replied to in just minutes.

On price alone 1&1 Internet Inc. has a great featre/price ratio. I haven't had any problems with them either.

The base package is currently $2.24 per month and gives you 250GB of trafic and 5GB of storage.

The next package up is $3.74 per month and jumps to 1-TB of traffic and 100GB of storage.

I used GoDaddy telephone support once. It was fast and good. I'm a happy customer too.
