OT: Image file types

As some of you know I produce sets of Video background loops that I sell, I am now looking into creating some Lower 3rd packages to sell as well which brings me to this question.
If I were making some graphic files that I wanted to be able to use on basically any editing software out there what would be the best file format to save them in?? I know I probably won't be able to cover all of them, but what format would work for most of the top ones like Vegas, Premiere, Avid, VT, Ulead.
A side note, all of these files will have a transparent layer that needs to stay intact so I am kind of limited to a few formats in that sense.
I'm thinking that a .png file would be the best but I would appreciate anyone elses insight.

The most popular jpeg and bmp. PNG are mostly to store internal info as transparent use in web.

But Bitmap and JPEG won't save the transparency.

If you're going to be using JUST still pictures (no pic sequences, video, etc.) use
PNG
TGA (or TIFF, one of those support transparency)
PSD (Photoshop)

Some support PNG (which works good in Vegas). Almost everything supports TGA or TIF (Even SGI's, 3d programs, games, NLE's, paint programs, etc.). PSD's are also good, and the user can move the layers around to do effects if they wanted (but to edit normaly need a good paint program).

That's about it.

Thanks, I guess I'll probably put a .png folder and a t.ga folder on the disc and that should cover most of them.
