Curiously, the Crystal Skull is a real artifact. Indiana Jones is based on a British archeologist from the 1920s by the name of "F.A. Mitchell-Hedges" He explored primarily around Honduras and Belize. He was quite the character and, much like Indiana Jones, was pretty controversial. The biggest controvery surrounding F.A. Mitchell Hedges is the famous crystal skull that was supposedly discovered in 1926 by his daughter, Anna Mitchell-Hedges, on her seventeenth birthday on an expedition to the Mayan ruins of Lubantuun in Southern Belize. This perfectly shaped human skull was carved from an 8-inch cube of rock crystal and is still in Anna's possession.
About ten years ago, my partners took Anna down to Lubantuun and shot about 200 hours of video footage of Anna and the Crystal Skull and also interviewed some of the Mayans that assisted F.A. Mitchell-Hedges on his expeditions. We had sat on the footage for quite a while but, when we found out that Steven Spielberg was making a new Indiana Jones movie about the Crystal Skull, we decided to take all this footage and try to produce a documentary about the skull to coincide with the release of the movie. We knew that Steven Spielberg has always been interested in F.A. Mitchell-Hedges and had talked with Anna on a bunch of different occasions.
I've held the skull and examined it. It is perfectly formed and has an articulated jaw, but I couldn't see any tool marks or figure out how it may have been carved. Anna's story is full of holes and the actual origin of the crystal skull remains a mystery. We plan on telling all sides of the story and let the viewer decide what's true and what isn't. We have our theories about its origin.
And thanks John for the info on the crystal skull, that's fascinating stuff. The real story behind the story, is often more interesting - looking forward to seeing what you come up with; please let us all know once you've got something ready, sounds great!
