Is this a band as in Rock Band or Brass band or....

In general I'd have my doubts about a shotgun for a band although we have a very expensive Azden stereo shotgun that with care does a very good job.

Concert/jazz with brass. The mic will be 40 or so feet away from the performers.

A shotgun might be your best bet although you're only going to get mono. If it's indoors then a XY pair will give you a natural sound, kind of like 'being there' however mic placement is pretty critical and these things aren't exactly cheap. Rode and others do make them, you oftenly see them hanging from the ceilings of large venues that are used for radio broadcasts.

Of course if this event is outdoors all bets are off, particulalry if it's windy as the sound gets blown around, you really need the mics in close with wind socks and in close one mic just isn't going to give you coverage.

This mic will be 1 of 4 going into a mixer, with a 2 channel output. I'm just worried that it will distort during loud passages.

That far back it should be OK, more likely to overload the mixer if anything I think.
If you can manage it recording each mic to its own track is a much safer approach, once it's mixed your stuck with it. If you've got 2 cameras you can record 4 channels!

Four channel audio would be great, but I have no way to accomplish that. I will have my good buddy (and sound guy extraordinaire) running the mixer. Thanks for your input.
