Having a sandybridge mb I’ve just spent a little time exploring the features of intel’s sandybridge & ivybridge chipsets and came across the above link.

EDIUS and Intel's Sandy Bridge Technology

If the link doesn't work just google the title. The youtube demo is quite impressive.

Is this a feature that might benefit vegas at sometime in the future after VP11 is fixed or just a recipe for disaster?

Intel's Quick Sync is a form of GPU rendering. It is done with chips that has onboard HD graphics. You also need a Z68 or Z77 mobo. So, if you are already using GPU rendering with an NVidia card, for example, then you have no use for Quick Sync. It would not make things any faster for you.
