in other words, if i double my cpu and ram, will i halve my render time (all other things being equal)

leslie

who's too confused to figure it out on paper (that is, even if he knew how to!)

Quick answer ? . . Nope!

However . . have you noticed there is always an however with this stuff? I have. There will be a levelling off of RAM amounts . .but then more RAM for RAM previewing is the real BONUS here . . Speed of RAM? Yes, but this is a Mobo thing to RAM and back . . others far cleverer than I can fill in the tech stuff on this .. but it aint solely about "2 x 2" maths . . it is about .. read on . . .

A Story of being Married to Vegas . . . .
A year ago I upgraded my whole approach and philosophy to doing editing.

Major part of this has been - now don't larf! - going fom my Dell P3 1.0ghzt 256 RAM to my now - affectionately named MONSTA! - which is a 3.2g 2gig RAM ASUS P4 G800 Delux .. . My reaction to using Vegas now on this setup was . . .. oh . . is that how Vegas is supposed to work ? .. oh right . . OH RIGHT! . .. Ooooohh Righgt ! . . . sorry. But yes, there is a difference.

BUT let's not get hung up on rendering ..
Now, there is a render test over with SPOT's site that you can view variouos people's experience with a "standard" high intensity Veg that pushes your system to work hard. - Ok, Dell laptop took 5mins . .. sitting down? The MONSTA! 1:40 . .that's I min and 40secs . . So a massive reduction on render . . . . BUT let's not get hung up on rendering .. let's talk about actual "Editing" and that all important aspect - PREVIEWING! Previewing for me IS the most importnat aspect. Without previewing to a good ExtMonitor I would be lost. Previewing in something near to R/T is the most important thing for me. . . I don't do POWER-Editing for online editing. I don't do in-studio high projects. I DO do stuff that hopefully WILL impress the client .. it has to have high prod values and so they can feel that I've pushed the creative envelope as much as this ole boy can do. Welll .. and this IS the point for us fortunate VegHeads . .Vegas is just so sexy when it comes to allowing us to PUSH and PUSH the envelope . .creatively . . that I forgive any s l o w i n g up the rendering . . And I believe as mobo and CPU hasten and ram speeds move along . . and they will . .Vegas and Vegas users are well placed to do the most important thing, and that is the creative stuff.

But what do I know . .?

Sorry for ranting on about Vegas . .

Grazie

ps: Er "Sorry for ranting on about Vegas . . " I lied! No apologies . . . I love it!

It really depends on what you're rendering. If there's no FXs etc then it's a straight data copy and the biggest bottleneck would be disk speed.
If it's CPU intensive then yes a faster CPU should yield a faster render, until you start to hit the disk limits. RAM I doubt will have an impact on render times.
Simple way to check yourself is open task manager during render and see how much RAM and CPU you're using for a typical task.

Bob, what's "your" typical favourite Task Manager leave alones? Also I notice there is a right click on each of the tasks being "done" for Normal . .to infinity type settings .. could you explain these? I'm looking to hasten my previewing . . I'm getting a bit clever with FXs and Presets .. but with this comes .. yes . . longer previewing times . . any good tips to increasing Previewing speeds?

...favourite Task Manager leave alones?

Grazie, I grabbed the following info from the Sony Vegas support site some time ago. I don't remember what the keywords were so I haven't been able to find it again :-( HTH.

Close all background applications. This is not limited to the programs that show in the system tray. Do a ctrl+alt+del and end task or process on as many applications as you can, leaving only Explorer and Systray for 98 or ME. For Windows 2000 and XP move over to the Processes Tab and click the "Image Name" heading at the top of this window twice, you would be able to view these items by alphabetical order. For Windows 2000, you should only have:

explorer.exe
lsass.exe
mapisp32.exe
mstask.exe
services.exe
smss.exe
spoolsv.exe
stisvc.exe
svchost.exe
system
system idle process
taskmgr.exe
winlogon.exe
winmgmt.exe

For Windows XP, you will only need next to your user name:

explorer.exe
taskmgr.exe

Next to "system":
csrss.exe
lsass.exe
mspmspv.exe
services.exe
smss.exe
spoolsv.exe
svchost.exe
system
system idle process
winlogon.exe
