OT-ish: Alternative Pop Chart?

Well, just humour me .. please?

It has been noticed what the impact of downloaded music is having on the "popularity" of this method of publication to the extent that there will now be a "Download" Top Ten Chart. Not news? Well . . that's me . . I think this may well have further ramifacations for all of us. I think it is a further welcomed indication of what business as videographers and video makers working in the "downstreaming" world can make use of . . Tip of the Iceberg? . . Tip of Everest I think.

Grazie

I can see it now - Jimmy Saville presenting "Top of the Downloads"

" ... and, guys and gals, still at number two for the third week in a row, a total of 3.7 terabytes downloaded this week - that's more than Paris Hilton - how's about a big hand for Grazie's "Can't get Rid of them Broadband Blues"

Not sure about over there but here there have been various "top downloads" lists around for more than a few years. Mostly it has been limited to either songs or software however I have also seen some for things like supermodels - as in "Most downloaded supermodel image" or the like. And the way things are going it could easly be movies, books and *shudder* personal info. Could you imagine - "Top 10 names and address accessed online this week"

Oan on a related, sort of note. The whole Metallica / Napster messl - A few weeks ago I am watching this interview and Lars says - and this is a direct quote: "Some lawyers and managers will hate me for this but I don't care if our fans download our music, I just wish they would wait until the album is out." Sort of makes that whole case about lost revenus a null point doesn't it?

The main problem Lars has was that they had a song called "I Dissapear" that was on the Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack. A unfinished copy of it was released on Napster and he was mad because the song got out before it was finished and that started the whole Napster war. Lars has always said that he could care less if people download their music, he just wants it to be the finished versions of the songs and not unfinished bootlegs.
(sorry for the rant, Metallica fan here :)

No problem - I have been ranting about Metallica for a long time now. I would probably say, next to the Greatful Dead, Metallica was/is one of the few "big" bands that has always endorsed bootlegs. Their unreleased demo was what helped to make them an international band. When the Napster debate started Lars wasn't just going on about one song - he was pointing out how many full albums were available on peer to peer, and the internet. From what I hear the new documentary about the band has a scene where the rest of the band goes off on Lars about him being against downloading. So you know - something to be said about bandmate and fan pressure I guess. I think to those who wanted to find something wrong they could look blindly at this big time band and say "See here is Metallica and they say it is costing them money and are against it!" but to the people who knew them when they were playing at the Troubadour as a new band, or to those who first heard of them via a bootleg, or to those who ever video taped or audio taped them legally via "tapers section" ticket - it was sort of like "Oh look at Lars the girlie man!" LOL.
